Explore 200 million years of history

The Jurassic Coast

Just 10 miles away from Riverwood and spanning 95 miles from Exmouth to Studland Bay in Dorset, is the incredible Jurassic Coast! The UNESCO World Heritage Site which is also known as ‘The Real Jurassic Park’ is one of the world’s hotspots for fossil hunting, with the area famous for coughing up treasures over 200 million years old! But the coastline doesn’t end there; beyond the dinosaur footprints are many stunning walking routes, picturesque fishing villages, and seaside towns that are just waiting to be discovered.

The Donkey Sanctuary

Only 10 miles away from Riverwood, in a tranquil corner of the Jurassic Coast is the ever-popular Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth. Head over with the family to meet hundreds of rescue donkeys and other animals who call this area of Devon home, learn all their stories, and get to know each individual animal. Beyond the animals are plenty of activities, trails, talks, workshops, and other areas to explore, as well as a busy calendar of live events we’d suggest keeping an eye on! Dog owners will be pleased to hear that well-behaved dogs are also welcome!

Beer

Nestled along the dramatic Jurassic Coast with tall white cliffs towering over, is the picturesque fishing village of Beer. Famous for its working beach, fish market, traditional pubs and charming cottages, Beer has forever been popular among holiday makers, walkers, and fishermen. Lovers of the outdoors will be pleased to hear that the South West Coat Path runs through the village and beyond into the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is East Devon. Less than 15 miles away from Riverwood is Pecorama; a world of miniature steam locomotives and beautifully maintained gardens that attract families and railway enthusiasts from around the country. Set on the hillside looking over the picturesque fishing village of Beer, Pecorama brings a full day of themed gardens, sea views, delicious food and of course, an unforgettable ride on the award-winning Beer Heights Light Railway. This historic attraction has been entertaining visitors for decades, and that’s not a surprise considering how incredible the views are from the top deck! Ride on heritage trams through Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon’s glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves, all of which offer unrivalled views of the surrounding landscape and wildlife.
